Mandate

The functions of the Council are:

  • to consult individuals, groups, and the public about health, social, and justice issues and report to the Commissioner in Executive Council on what they believe the issues are and on how they believe the issues should be dealt with;
  • to recommend to the Commissioner in Executive Council ways of encouraging and creating effective partnerships of individuals, groups, communities, and governments in the planning and implementation of health and social programs and services and the integration of health programs and services with social programs and services;
  • to advise the Commissioner in Executive Council on issues relating to the provision of health and social programs and services;
  • to encourage the development of programs by communities, governmental and non-governmental agencies, and aboriginal organizations to provide innovative, integrated, and effective ways of addressing social needs;
  • to suggest to the Commissioner in Executive Council new visions for health and social services policy;
  • to advise the Commissioner in Executive Council on the implementation of the Health Act and on the use of the Health Investment Fund;
  • to recommend to the Commissioner in Executive Council any research the Council considers useful or necessary;
  • with the approval of the Commissioner in Executive Council, to undertake studies of issues relating to the provision of health, social, and justice programs and services; 
  • at the request of the Commissioner in Executive Council, to evaluate the effect of programs or services and how they are provided;
  • to encourage improvements in the health and well-being of people in Yukon; and
  • to undertake any other functions that the Commissioner in Executive Council may assign.

Membership

The Commissioner in Executive Council appoints the Chair and 13 other members. The Minister of Health and Social Services and the Minister of Justice are ex-officio members. The Commissioner in Executive Council may designate one member of the Council to be a Co-Chair to act as the deputy of the chair.

Members are selected from throughout Yukon to represent the voice of all Yukon residents. The Commissioner in Executive Council must consider the racial, cultural, regional, and gender balance of Yukon when appointing members to achieve equitable representation of the diversity of health care and social service groups and interests.

Appointment process: Order in Council

Requirements: No legislated criteria required to join.

Term: Up to 3 years. May be reappointed.

Meetings: 4 times a year.
