(updated 2009)
More than $16 million is expected to be allocated this year.
Half ($8 million) is available to projects that address key Yukon government or Yukon First Nation priorities. The Yukon government will use its priority funding to offset costs associated with an on-going project to upgrade the emergency mobile radio system.
The First Nations priorities are in two areas: an initiative to collect, analyze and store Yukon First Nation statistical information and projects aimed at revitalizing Yukon First Nation languages.
The remaining $8 million will be available for distribution through the regular Northern Strategy Trust process.
Only Yukon First Nation governments and Yukon government departments are eligible to submit proposals, either separately or jointly. However, eligible proponents have the discretion to take on and champion projects on behalf of external organizations and groups.
Assistance for First Nations’ Applications
For the 2009 intake, the Joint Body has engaged the services of Matt Mehaffey to assist Yukon First Nations in the proposal-writing process. Mr. Mehaffey will be able to assist in identifying projects that are consistent with the Northern Strategy Trust application criteria and in the completion of the Conceptual Proposal and Detailed Proposal.
