Mandate

Every teacher hired into a teaching position in Yukon is required to go through the Teacher Qualification Board. The purpose of presentation to the Board is to determine salary category for new teachers based on post-secondary education and past teaching experience. The Board determines the category of certificate of qualification and the years of teaching experience for salary purposes to be assigned to a teacher in accordance with the Teacher Qualification Regulations. The Board makes the final decision regarding placement and reviews of one's pay qualifications.

Membership

The Minister appoints 3 members composed of:

  • 1 representative of the teachers’ association,
  • 1 professional educator selected by mutual agreement of the teachers’ association and the Minister, and
  • 1 representative of the Minister, usually the Assistant Deputy Minister of Public Schools, who is the Chair.

Appointment process: Ministerial appointment

Requirements: No legislated criteria required to join.

Term: 3 years for members and the Chair is appointed for an indeterminate period.

Meetings: 2 times a year and at the call of the Chair.
