Mandate

The Council:

  • develops public awareness of the issues affecting the status of women;
  • promotes a change of attitudes in Yukon so that women may enjoy equality of opportunity;
  • encourages discussions and expressions of opinion by Yukon residents on issues affecting the status of women;
  • reviews policies, programs, and legislation affecting women as directed by the Minister;
  • advises the Minister with respect to any issues that the Minister may refer to the council for its consideration;
  • advises the Minister with respect to any issues that the council considers advisable; and
  • encourages organizations and groups that promote the equality of women.

The Council may:

  • receive and hear submissions and suggestions from individuals and groups concerning the status of women;
  • recommend and participate in programs concerning the status of women;
  • recommend ways of creating effective partnerships of individuals, groups, communities, and government for the planning and implementation of programs and services improving the status and equality of women;
  • publicize information with respect to the status of women;
  • consult with individuals, groups, and the public about matters concerning the status of women;
  • research matters relating to the status of women and suggest research areas that may be studied by any interested person;
  • publish any reports, studies, and recommendations that the council considers advisable; and
  • obtain funding from government, or from private foundations or agencies.

Membership

The Commissioner in Executive Council appoints no more than 8 members upon the recommendation of the Minister. The Commissioner in Executive Council appoints a Chair and a Vice-Chair from the members.

Appointment process: Order in Council

Requirements: Members to be representative of Yukon women. This includes regions of Yukon (at least 50% from rural areas), First Nations (at least 25%) and Yukon women’s organizations.

Term: Not to exceed 3 years. Member may be reappointed for a further term.

Meetings: At least 4 meetings a year. Meetings may be held anywhere in Yukon.
