The Board hears appeals of applicants who have been denied legal aid and makes a final decision with respect to the appellant’s application. The Board also oversees the finances of the society. The society is an independent, non-profit organization that provides legal help for people in the Yukon. The Society is not a government agency, organization, or department.

The Board consists of no more than seven members who are appointed by the Minister of Justice. The Minister may consult with or solicit recommendations for appointments to the board from the Law Society of Yukon, the Attorney-General of Canada, the Canadian Bar Association (Yukon), the Council for Yukon First Nations, and any other organization the Minister considers appropriate. The Board selects a chair from its members.
Appointment process: Ministerial appointment
Requirements: Any person appointed to the Board by the Minister as a result of consultation with, or recommendations from an organization listed above, shall act solely in the best interests of the society and not in any way as a representative of the organization.
Term: Not exceeding 3 years. Members are eligible for reappointment on the expiration of their term of office.
Meetings: The third Thursday of each month for 2—3 hours.
