Mandate

Under the authority of the Medical Profession Act, the Council is responsible for regulating the practice of medicine and medical care provided by licensed physicians in Yukon. They facilitate and promote an effective regulatory system for Yukon medical practitioners to serve the public interest. The Council provides leadership and guidance for medical practitioners and fosters quality health care services for Yukon.

The Council carries out duties as given or imposed by the Act with respect to the regulation of professional activities of individuals who practice medicine. The Council may recommend regulations as needed to carry out the spirit and intent of the Act. It may recommend regulations consistent with the Act such as: control of registers, application forms, registration and annual fees, records and accounts kept by members of the medical profession with respect to the practice of medicine; or prescribe procedures and rules of evidence in proceedings for an inquiry or hearing.

Membership

The Commissioner in Executive Council appoints 6 members as follows:

  • 3 medical practitioners who are: nominated by the Yukon Medical Association, resident in Yukon, and registered pursuant to the Act;
  • 1 medical practitioner who may be resident outside Yukon and who may or may not be registered pursuant to the Act (in consultation with the Yukon Medical Association); and
  • 2 lay persons who are resident in Yukon.

The Commissioner in Executive Council appoints any member who is a medical practitioner resident in Yukon to serve as Chair. The Council appoints a Vice-Chair from its membership annually. The Chair and Vice-Chair are eligible for reappointment in any year after their initial appointment.

Appointment process: Order in Council

Requirements: No legislated criteria required to join.

Term: 3 years. Note: An existing member may continue to hold office until a new appointment is made. Retiring members are eligible for reappointment if otherwise qualified pursuant to the Act.

Meetings: Once a month.
